The production Carmen Funebre was created in 1994, inspired by the war in Bosnia and other ethnic conflicts, as well as world-wide outbreaks of nationalism and intolerance. During the preparatory work on the performance the members of the group talked to refugees from the former Yugoslavia. The refugees’ accounts of their experience helped the group to build universal metaphors describing the fate of displaced people.
In Carmen Funebre Teatr Biuro Podrozy makes use of spectacular means of expression that attract the attention of both the experienced spectactor as well as the accidental passer-by. Stilts, fire, special lighting effects and piercing music evoke fear and compassion. The use of text in the performance is very limited but the sequence of powerful images makes a great impression on the audience.
