Written in 1926 by Imre Kalman, the operetta ’”The Circus Princess’’ has known many talented versions and many theatrical and cinematic fates. Now the Musical Theatre of Moscow has paired with the 7 Fingers to tell the audience its own version of the story, a story of despair, resentment, love, and hope. In this telling, the senses are sharpened by the danger of the circus arts. Existing stereotypes are broken down as the operetta is transformed into a complete performance synthesizing several genres: operetta, musical theatre, dance, and contemporary circus.
Theatre actors perform together with circus artists in a unique and inventive staging by Sébastien Soldevila (the 7 Fingers). The show incorporates a cast of forty artists including actors, singers, acrobats, and dancers, and an orchestra of fifteen musicians. In addition to the staging of the show, the 7 Fingers designed the set, costumes, and lighting.
